"Focus Up" came to our school on 3 occasions and conducted stage combat workshops. They were very professional, clearly understood how to work with adolescents and very knowledgeable. Safety was paramount in the session and my students learned a lot about on-stage fighting. We will definitely have them back to our school.
I had great feedback from the kids who were able to articulate the purpose of the activities and what they got out of the Resiliency program. The staff were impressed and the students were enaged.
The most important aspect to me is what the kids use long AFTER the workshops are over. Throughout the school year I watched students employ the techniques taught by Focus Up instructors again and again....techniques they used with confidence and the safety of their acting partners in mind. Simply stated, Focus Up did a terrific job with our students.
The YMCA Day Camps have been booking these workshops this past summer, and we have always been completely satisfied with the quality and educational programming that Dwayne and his team has brought along with to each and every visit. Our campers range from ages 6-12 and our staff/volunteers are ages 13+. Dwayne’s programming has been appropriate for all ages and has been engaging for a variety of people including our youngest campers and campers with exceptionalities. He has always worked to make sure the programming is inclusive for everyone involved, even our counsellors. I feel the workshops are safe, fun and educational and we can’t wait for Focus Up to come back in the years to come.
We had a student with Aspergers and to see him thoroughly engaged in the activities and finding his voice was a big step forward for him.
Not only did they deliver a course that focused on life skills like communication, listening, co-operation, teamwork and resilience, but they did it in a fun and engaging way.
This workshop really impressed me. Tracy and Dwayne kept the group small so everyone got focused attention and constructive feedback that was always given in a positive and supportive way. Each scene was taped and played back as we went along, so the actors could see themselves and improve upon performances throughout the day. We learned practical ways to make characters that we read for more funny and interesting in auditions. Overall, a valuable learning experience that's helped me to reach a higher level in my audition technique.
